New Class New Semester

 Hello Beautiful people,

A new semester starts, and you know what that means? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, more art! So, this semester, we are learning typography. I'm not gonna lie; my initial reaction to this class was "great.. letters". Then, I watched a Ted Talk that blew my mind.

Wake Up and Smell the Fonts with Sarah Hyndman was eye-opening to say the least. I'll let you guys watch it, but the premise of the talk is that Fonts tell stories with influence and about how they influence us without us even knowing. She goes over different Typefaces and the message they can convey; for example, The very popular Times New Roman (1931) is a typeface that can be used-

"If you want your typeface to be serious or credible."

See what I did there? Looks so heavy, right? This is the kind of font you want to type up some legal documents with.

I like the font that I'm using now, Poppins (2014), compared to what I was previously using, which was actually Times New Roman, because not only is it legible and pretty comfortable on the eyes compared to the serious serif type, but also readability is pretty seamless. Eh, see! This is the kind of stuff the class has me thinking about now! I think it's pretty cool.

So far, I'm learning a lot about the anatomy of type and the differences between Serifs and San Serif-type letter faces.

As you can see through my notes, Serifs have little extenders or little feet (footers). They're most noticeable in capital letters. Sans Serif is what I'm using now to write this post! Notice no extenders, right? That's because Sans means without in French.

This top example is horrible, but you gotta start somewhere, right?

The world of typography is incredibly interesting and beautiful. I started a Pinterest section to collect more styles and examples for reference and inspiration. Feel free to check it out here!

I can't wait to start my letter font projects and see what kind of stuff I can come up with! If you guys have any advice or suggestions, please drop them down here, and let's take this creative journey together!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

-Cindy
